The Korean beauty craze has been going strong for quite some time.People are talking about it... South Korea is world-renowned for its pursuit of perfection, whether it be in education, technology, but also cosmetics...
Men or women, all seek to have a perfect, clean, flawless face, attach great importance to uniform and radiant skin ... and sometimes some go through more hardcore means to achieve this so-called perfection, which is nothing other than cosmetic surgery. But the most reasonable have opted for effective cosmetic products. This rush towards perfect skin has influenced thousands of laboratories, competition is tough and good products become known very quickly. Sub-sectors with high potential have emerged: cosmeceuticals and dermo-cosmetics.
A cosmeceutical is a cosmetic that has or claims to have medicinal properties, for example – a product with an anti-aging property can be classified as a cosmeceutical. Currently, the hottest trends are products that claim technologies related to pollution, aging, and antioxidants. Additionally, microbiome cosmetics that boost skin immunity have caught the attention of many leading beauty and skincare brands. As for the ingredients, natural/organic/stem cell/probiotic and peptide ingredients are in the spotlight these days.
In South Korea, cosmetics are regulated by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS).
Cosmetics are divided into two categories: functional cosmetics and regular cosmetics. Functional cosmetics, which until 2017 included skin lightening, anti-wrinkle, sunscreen and tanning products, now include hair dyes, hair nutrients and cosmetics that help protect damaged skin. MFDS only reviews functional cosmetics for pre-market approval. For all other regular cosmetics, MFDS has authorized the Korea Pharmaceutical Traders Association (KPTA) to review and certify the import approval applications submitted by the Korean importer.
In addition, South Korea implemented the Recycling Act in December 2019, which is applicable and impacts all products available in South Korea, including cosmetics. Under the Recycling Act, the use of hard-to-recycle plastics such as PVC and colored PET bottles has been banned. (source: ITA trade)
Koreans focus on skin care under the influence of TV programs, advertisements , and tradition. Koreans place great importance on even and glowing skin [ and Korean women tend to vary their beauty care regimen with the season. They use different types of moisturizers such as pore-tightening creams ( BB cream , blemish balm, or beauty balm) and skin-lightening lotions ( CC cream , color corrector, or color control).
Koreans typically wear makeup every day because it provides sun protection , a major concern. Korean skin care focuses primarily on skin lightening, which is why many Korean cosmetics have skin-lightening properties. Skin lightening is not the same as skin whitening, also known as skin bleaching , which is a reduction of melanin in the skin. Instead, skin lightening focuses on treating hyperpigmentation .
In order to achieve a perfectly even complexion, Korean women go as far as performing an 8-10 step daily skincare routine. Traditionally, these extensive routines include a makeup remover , double cleanse (i.e., cleansing with oil and water), exfoliator , toner , essence (lightweight hydrating concentrates), treatments (boosters, serums, ampoules), masks (a liquid-based formula that claims to hydrate, brighten, and even treat fine lines), eye cream, moisturizer , and sunscreen .
